Iwamoto Tournament 2006 Rules

General Issues

1.Registration

1.1
Between April 30 and May 13 2006 the registration form will be available at the official tournament website (www.achgo.cl/iwamoto2006). The form must be filled with the following information: first and last name, country, e-mail to be used during the tournament, KGS nick, and rank according to the following:

You can use either your IGS or KGS ranking, as long as it is confirmed, i.e.: on IGS you must have played enough games to have a star (*) next to your rank; on KGS you must not have either of the symbols (?) or (-) next to your rank. Players without confirmed KGS or IGS ranks will not be accepted.

1.2
In order to make the IGS and KGS ranks uniform, for registration purposes you must take note of the Equivalence Table, which will be used by the officials to validate your registration. If you need someone to play against in order to help confirm your rank, a list of available players will be posted in the tournament's official website.

1.3
The tournament officials will not take notice if a player's rank changes once the tournament has started. In fact, it is expected that many players will improve in the course of a tournament as long as this one, and it is in the spirit of Iwamoto Kaoru's legacy that they improve. In short: a player's category will not change during the tournament, even if his rank changes.

2. Dates

2.1
The tournament starts May 16 2006. The pairings for the first round will be published the day before.

3. Official Language

3.1
The official language to communicate with the Iwamoto Tournament officials will be English.

3.2
The use of any other language is allowed for communication between the players as long as both have command of it. If this is not the case, the language to be used for contact between the players shall be English.

4. Where to play

4.1
The tournament games shall be played exclusively in the KGS room called Sala Andina, which can be found under National.

4.2
In this room you will also find tournament officials, identified with special accounts, as indicated in the tournament website.

5. Scheduling games

5.1
Each round will last one week, starting on Tuesday and ending on Sunday. Both players shall agree on the date and time for the game following these rules:

  1. The pairings will be published before Tuesday at 12:00 GMT.
  2. To ensure more time flexibility, we recommend that you agree on a date and time before Thursday at 12:00 GMT of the week the game is to be played. The final deadline to reply to your opponent about the game is Saturday at 12:00 GMT. After that, the match will be awarded to the player who tried to communicate with his or her opponent. In case neither player tried to contact his or her opponent, both will lose the match.
  3. Both the preliminary discussions and the agreement shall take place exclusively through the message system at the tournament website (www.achgo.cl/iwamoto2006). The tournament officials will not consider discussions through other methods for resolving conflicts that may arise. We recommend that no confidential information be revealed during the conversations between the players, as these will be archived as part of the tournament's record.

6. Tournament System

  1. Swiss system to eight rounds.
  2. The tournament will be divided into categories according to ranking, played without handicap and with 6.5 komi points in white's favor.
  3. The official division of the players into categories will be published two days before the beginning of the tournament.
  4. The games shall be played on 19x19 board for all categories. Other board sizes will be considered invalid.
  5. The players will be distributed into categories as follows:
    Category Ranking
    Category 1 9d - 3d KGS
    Category 2 2d - 1k KGS
    Category 3 2k - 5k KGS
    Category 4 6k - 9k KGS
    Category 5 10k - 15k KGS
    Category 6 16k - 20k KGS
    Category 7 21k - 30k KGS
Two days before the start of the Tournament, the list with the categories of all players will be published.

7. Postponed games

7.1
If a player is not able to play a game during the week it is to be scheduled, the game may be postponed. In order to do this, the player's opponent must agree (if not, the match will be awarded to the latter). To postpone, the player must send an e-mail to Iwamoto Tournament 2006 Administration, explaining the reasons for postponement and including the date when the game will be played, which must be during the next round.

7.2
Postponement of a game will affect the pairings for the next round. In order that the postponement does not affect adversely the player who is not trying to postpone (because of the effect of SOS), the following will be used only for the effect of calculating the pairings:

  1. If black requests the postponement, white will be considered as having won.
  2. If white requests the postponement, black will be considered as having won.
  3. If both request postponement or there is some ambiguity, both will be considered as having lost.

7.3
Once the pending game has been played, the official result will replace the temporary one assigned.

7.4
You can only have one postponed game at a time and it must be played during the next round. If a player can't find time to play the postponed game during the next round, he or she will lose the game.

8. Time for play

8.1
The games shall be played with 15 minutes initial time and 20 minutes for 25 stones (Canadian byo-yomi).

9. Results

9.1
The games may be played until 23:59 GMT on Sunday each week. The winner, to validate the result, must register it and attach the game file, using the user menu.

9.2
Any problem or error must be immediately communicated to the officials by sending an e-mail to Iwamoto Tournament 2006 Administration.
Late complaints will not be considered. The complaining period is from Sunday at 0:00 GMT until Monday at 23:59 GMT.

9.3
The official results will be published in the tournament official website at the end of each round, before 12:00 GMT on Tuesday.

10. Conflicts

10.1
Any conflict that may arise between the players shall be taken to the administration for its resolution. In order to do this, send an e-mail explaining the problem in either English or Spanish to Iwamoto Tournament 2006 Administration

10.2
In case of an unjustified no-show for an already agreed game, the game shall be awarded to the player who showed up, who must immediately communicate what happened to the administration. Nevertheless, you should wait 15 minutes for your opponent and leave him or her a message in the tournament website to validate the claim.

10.3
Each player is responsible for his own Internet connection. It is left to his or her opponent's judgement whether to continue an intermittent game.

10.4
We expect the players to act in good faith. For example, if one of the players, because of distraction or inexperience with the KGS system, forgets to mark dead stones before clicking done, the opponent is expected to help.

10.5
If a player cannot continue playing in the tournament, he or she must let the administration know about it, so that the player can be excluded from the next rounds.

10.6
If only one of the players leaves messages for his or her opponent in the official website trying to schedule a game and doesn't receive an answer before the deadline established above, the match will be awarded to the player who published the messages.

10.7
If none of the players sends messages to his or her opponent through the official system, the game will be considered unplayed, and both players will receive zero points and a warning message. If this repeats in another round, the player involved will be excluded from the rest of the tournament.

11. The final match

11.1
The winner of Category 1 shall play a simultaneous game against the winners of the other categories in the week after the end of the tournament. The date and time to play will be agreed upon by the winners, who will let the administration know of the date so that it can be published in the website.

12. Prizes

12.1
The three best-placed players of each category shall receive a medal.
